Michael Bisset

Michael grew up in Africa, the beautiful Cape Town to be exact, then he moved across the seas to Europe and to New Zealand, to explore his roots and family connections.

 He then spent a decade in Sydney, Australia before coming home again to Aotearoa. He has works in collections in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

 We are excited by the size, colours and textures in Michael’s work and look forward to more fresh works by him in the near future.

“The core of what I do is a quiet urge to tap into the first ever mark made on a wall in some forgotten cave.

 Paint lets me do that-it's raw, direct, and never quite the same twice.

 I don't copy what's out there; instead I build a world that's only mine, shaped by gut, by mood, by whatever flickers past reason.

 Every canvas starts as noise, then suddenly sharpens

—just for a breath—into truth. That's the rush: watching order bloom from mess.

 To stay honest, keep twisting the rules, swapping brushes for rags, thinning oils, acrylics, anything so the next stroke isn't waiting for me.

 I want pieces that breathe, that demand you look without explaining why. Nothing repeated, nothing safe…..each one, a lone voice you can't ignore.
