Judy Curnow

 Judy is an oil painter. She has painted from an early age and is predominantly self-taught. 

It was an invitation by Tim Wilson (Master of Light) in 2009, and one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed landscape artists, changed her life. After viewing some of Judy’s paintings Tim invited Judy to paint with him. 

This transformed her work and ignited her career. Over the past 17 years Judy has felt extremely honoured to have been mentored by Tim. Learning from him many invaluable techniques that have enabled her paintings to get to the level where they featured in Tim’s exclusive gallery in Queenstown. “He taught me to be more confident and bold when painting with oils, that there were no shortcuts to an amazing painting.” 

As the value of Judy’s paintings increased, so has her global profile, and her work is becoming highly sought after in New Zealand and abroad. 

In conjunction with the Tim Wilson Gallery, her works featured in a sell-out exhibition at the Orion Powerhouse Gallery in Akaroa. Seven paintings sold within days of the opening. 

Judy also achieved “Best in Colour” award at the Art in the Park exhibition in Auckland. 

Now painting full-time in her studio in Wanaka, Judy draws inspiration from her beautiful surroundings. Her paintings are generally snapped up often before the paint is dry.

There is a distinct, rich tapestry like vibe to her paintings regardless of the subject matter.

Her cheery, colour drenched works feature blooms bursting from the canvass with a refreshing spin on the tried and true genres of landscape and still life. In particular her works pop with lush hues, 3D like texture, and immense clarity of light. Pleasures of the natural world personified. 

Judy’s paintings have become an aspirational marker of their own.
