Hazel Smith

With work that explores concepts of ghosts, memory and healing Hazel Smith's practice
seeks to invite you to look inward at your own past and place in the world.

Having gained her Bachelor of Fine Art at Elam UOA, Smith is a Southland and Otago-based artist with previous exhibitions held called, “Holding Hands with a Ghost” at Art Attic, and “Sanctifying the Fog” at both Arts Murihiku and The Junction Lawrence.

Her work from “Holding Hands with a Ghost” delves into the
idea of confronting and illuminating the ghosts that stay with us long after their first encounter.

Symbols such as “witches stones” peer into the past. While droplets of “blood's tears” are traced by memory. In taking the hand of the ghost she hopes to find a means to bring peace to this way of viewing the past.

Hazel's current red or black works on display here at Invernui Gallery are Lino-cut prints on Saunders Waterford paper.
